How to Make Old-Fashioned Jell-O Shots

Some people consider putting expensive whiskey to waste a crime against humanity. Others think it's good for a laugh. In his new book Hacking Whiskey, drinks writer and Esquire contributor Aaron Goldfarb tells the story of what is perhaps the most sacrilegious use of bourbon yet: making Jell-O shots with an ultra rare bottle of Pappy Van Winkle Family Reserve Bourbon 15 Year Old.
Jeremy Johnson invented the shots when his Louisville bar scored a ration of Pappy. "I've lived in Kentucky since I was 10. Whiskey is friendship, community; it's about drinking it," he told Goldfarb. The worshipful hype around the Pappy didn't match his worldview, so he made it as low brow as he could. The Pappy Jell-O shots went viral.
As for the shots themselves, they're made by mixing a large batch of Old Fashioned cocktail with flavorless gelatin, which means they taste a lot better than your standard vodka-and-grape pairings. Here's the recipe from Goldfarb's book. And don't worry, he says a more accessible bourbon substitute will do.
