Latest beauty trends, and how to make them work for you (really)
Windy days, dry air, maybe a sunburn from a winter getaway or ski trip thrown in there. In winter, skin takes a beating.
You could stick with tried-and-true methods for dealing with it. Or, you can take a look at some of the latest innovations and trends in skin care and makeup. Here are a dozen trending products, with tips for working them into your routine.
Skin care
Van der Pop Forget Balm($35 at vanderpop.com). As pot legalization becomes more widespread, companies are jumping on its renewed trendiness, doing things like infusing a host of skin-care products with non-psychoactive CBD — meaning, sorry, it won’t get you high. It is, however, supposed to be anti-inflammatory, helping with aches and acne. This new balm out of Seattle pairs hemp seed oil with all-natural butters and oils, along with eucalyptus and rosemary essential oils for a fresh scent and muscle-soothing effects. And, for a limited time, it comes in one of the reusable violet glass stash jars the company is known for.
Cosrx Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence ($19 at sokoglam.com). Have Olympic fever — or just want to see what the Korean-beauty hype is all about? Then jump in with both feet by trying one of the oddest — but most lauded — K-beauty treatments: snail mucus. Praised for its ability to boost skin’s elasticity and hydration, its packed into this essence, which is applied after cleansing and toning.
Paula’s Choice Pore Clarifying Charcoal Gel Mask ($30 at paulaschoice.com). Get hip to masking and the detoxing power of charcoal with this locally developed mask that draws out oil and pore-congesting debris. It has a lighter texture than many charcoal masks, making it easier to rinse off, with less over-drying.
Farmacy Honey Potion Renewing Antioxidant Hydration Mask with Echinacea GreenEnvy ($56 at Sephora). If you need intense hydration, try this mask that employs the hot-again concept of using food items to boost your beauty (remember putting mayo and beer in your hair?). This time, honey is the active ingredient, used to increase moisture, along with echinacea, for its hydration and antioxidant properties.
Herbivore Jade Facial Roller ($25 at herbivorebotanicals.com). Skip the scary micro-needling treatments and try this locally made facial roller to improve blood flow, aid in lymphatic drainage and reduce puffiness. It can help push skin-care products deeper into the skin, and the cool jade stone aids in relaxation and inflammation reduction.
Makeup & nails
Butter London PureCure Manicure System Starter Kit ($69 at butterlondon.com). The lifespan of a gel manicure is amazing, but the damaging effects on your nails can be devastating — especially if you end up peeling the paint off instead of getting it professionally removed.
Local company Butter London decided to work with that tendency for its first gel product, creating a polish that is meant to be peeled off, causing little to no damage to the nails. The starter kit includes an LED (not UV) nail lamp; special peel-off base coat, top coat and polish; and accessories and instructions.
Fenty Beauty Mattemoiselle Plush Matte Lipstick in Shawty ($18 at Sephora). Embrace the return of the ’90s in fashion and makeup with an updated take on brown lipstick. This lightweight, matte formula from Rihanna’s blockbuster makeup line channels the era but with a bit more softness to keep it modern.
Maybelline City Mini Eyeshadow Palette($10 at drugstores). Eyeshadow palettes are back with a vengeance, as is glitter and shimmer. If you’re drawn to the ability to experiment and add a little pop to your look — but aren’t ready to throw down $50 or more — try out this petite palette. It’s available in seven color combos, with at least three shimmer shadows in each, as well as highlighter and liner shades.
Butter London Glazen Blush Gelée ($26 at butterlondon.com). Selfies were instrumental in the rise of contouring and highlighting — both help define the face in photos, but can look harsh in person. This new locally developed gel blush adds luminous color to the cheeks in the style of a highlighter, but without making the skin look wet or sparkly. A pudding-like texture dries down to a powder, and the effect can be kept light and subtle, or built up for more impact.
Ilia True Skin Serum Foundation($54 at iliabeauty.com). Perfect skin is always nice, but a lighter touch with foundation is back in vogue, as are multitasking products. This new formula out of Vancouver helps balance your skin tone with weightless, medium coverage, while a complexion-enhancing serum works to tame redness and plump fine lines.
Naked Truth Beauty Lip & Cheek Stick ($36 at nakedtruthbeauty.com). Speaking of multitasking — if you’re a clean beauty fan, this handmade stick out of Vashon Island will be just your cup of tea. Its buildable color works on lips and cheeks, and its ingredients are simple, natural and mostly organic. Even its packaging is made from recycled materials.
Milk Makeup Holographic Lip Gloss($24 at milkmakeup.com). It may sound a little too trendy, but ultra-hip holographic makeup is really very wearable for all ages. In small doses, like with this lip gloss available in two hues, it adds a dynamic sheen that catches the light and brightens the face. Something we could all use in the dead of winter.
