The Doctor Is In: The health benefits of music therapy

WAUSAU, Wis., (WSAW)-- We've all heard the old adage, "music is good for the soul." But according to science it's good for your body as well.

As part of the weekly health segment, "The Doctor Is In," Sunrise 7 welcomed Owner, Neurologic Music Therapist of Music Therapy Services of Central Wisconsin, LLC, Richelle Kroening, MT-BC, WMTR.

Music Therapy is an established health profession in which music is used within a therapeutic relationship with a Board Certified Music Therapist to address physical, emotional, cognitive, and social needs of individuals.

According to Kroening, benefits of music therapy include improvement of walking and respiratory function for people with Parkinson’s Disease, increasing communication and emotional regulation skills for children with autism, improving the quality of life for persons with Alzheimer’s Disease and their caregivers, and decreasing pain and anxiety for people going through cancer treatment.

Music therapists usually receive referrals from doctors, nurses, case managers and school psychologists for a specific need.

"Music therapists complete a comprehensive assessment, which includes how the client responds to music and how it may be helpful in treatment. We work in a variety of settings including schools, hospitals, nursing homes, mental health agencies, and in hospice programs," explained Kroening.
