Lake Country School students win statewide contest for app touting the benefits of vaccines

Three eighth-graders at Lake Country School took first place in a statewide contest for an app they created about vaccines.

The three students, whose team was named Three of a Kind, won the 16th annual eCYBERMISSION competition, one of several science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) initiatives sponsored by the U.S. Army Educational Outreach Program (AEOP).

The web-based competition for sixth- through ninth-graders is administered by the National Science Teachers Association.

Working in teams of three or four, students were asked to identify a problem in their community and using scientific practices or the engineering design process to develop a solution. At each grade level, students are awarded prizes at the state, regional and national level.

The winning trio worked with their adviser, Lake Country School teacher Jill Koszarek, to create an app that educates the public on vaccines and the benefits of vaccinations to individuals and the community. The app is not yet available to the public.

The team made it into the regional competition, as one of 60 teams, but did not advance to the national competition.

First-place teams received $1,000 worth of savings bonds per student team member. Second-place teams received $500 in savings bonds per student team member.

Another Lake Country School team, comprising students Lauren Peterson, Olivia Schneider, Sydney Marsh and Caroline Nunnally, earned honorable mention at the state competition for their project that designed and set up small-scale, affordable hydroponic systems to offer schools a way to incorporate fresh vegetables into their lunch programs.

"I am just amazingly proud of them for the fact that they did get onto the regional competition, or even if they got as far as they did at the state level. But to get to the regional level of competition is quite amazing and quite exciting for them," Koszarek said.
