Len Rome's Local Health: Doctors list benefits of eating slowly

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WYTV) - Want to lose a few pounds but not sure where to start?

Doctors say the key may be to take things slow -- or at least the way you eat.

Dr. Leslie Heinberg of the Cleveland Clinic said eating too quickly can make people more likely to gain weight.

"People who are were the slowest eaters had the lowest risk of obesity. People who self-described as medium-eaters had a bit higher risk -- but the highest risk was in the fast-eating group."

When you eat the signals of hunger have to move from our stomach to our brain -- that doesn't happen quickly.

Eating slower allows this process to happen while you're still eating, and that allows you to feel full before eating too much.

Doctors recommend using a timer or counting bites to change your eating habits. You can also put your hand in your lap and put your fork down between bites.

They said it should take about 30 minutes to eat an entire meal.
