Bacteria teach us how to make green fuel from carbon dioxide

Bacteria from sea and soil have inspired artificial enzymes that could solve two global problems at once by generating green fuels and plastics from carbon dioxide, the dominant air pollutant causing global warming. The enzymes do the job whether they’re in the bacteria where they originated, or whether they’re synthetic versions of their natural counterparts.

One source of these enzymes, Azotobacter vinelandii, is a harmless soil bacterium found everywhere on the planet. The other, Methanosarcina acetivorans, survives in marine sediments. They both contain nitrogenase enzymes which have now been shown to …
