How To Make The Perfect Cup Of Coffee

Americans drink over 280 million cups of coffee each day at home, amounting to over 102 billion home-brewed cups of coffee a year. That's a whole lot of coffee. But it turns out a third of them may be making it wrong, at least if making the perfect cup of coffee is the goal.

According to a National Coffee Association study conducted in 2014, one third of respondents said they had a coffee over the past 24 hours from a single cup machine like a Keurig. That number went up 5 percent over figures collected in 2013, along with another 25 percent of respondents saying they planned to buy a single-cup machine over the coming year.

Don't get me wrong. There's nothing wrong with single-cup machines. Especially if you're in a time crunch.

But does the added convenience of a single cup machine make for better tasting coffee? Experts say no.

Go with whole beans every time.

When it comes to pre-ground coffeeversus whole bean coffee, reach for the whole beans every time.

Here's why: using pre-ground coffee means you're losing flavor from oils that would otherwise still be trapped inside of the bean. Once those oils are exposed to air they begin to oxidize, losing their moisture and aroma, sometimes up to 60 percent within 15 minutes.
