How to make your jeans last longer

Stop dye running
Verity Mann, GHI’s head of testing, has a clever tip: before washing jeans for the first time, soak in lukewarm water to which salt has been added. This will set the dye.

Don’t overwash
Frequent washing shortens the life of your jeans.

Take out of machine
If you do wash jeans in the machine, whip them out as soon as the full cycle ends. This prevents creases and faded wrinkles setting in.

Hang to dry
Tumble drying can damage Lycra fibres (aka elastane), which give stretch jeans their stretchiness. Let them dry naturally instead.

The right detergent
To wash dark jeans, use a laundry detergent for coloured garments. Other detergents are packed with “optical brighteners”. These make whites whiter, but can make colours fade.
