Heartland tour showcases the benefits of solar power in Southern Illinois

CARBONDALE, IL – Neighbors across the country and here at home are opening their homes to strangers to show the benefits of solar power.

The Heartland Solar Tour is highlighting the benefits of solar power and features 3,000 communities across America, including Carbondale, Illinois.

The Gaia House in Carbondale is the latest place to go solar and is part of the Heartland Solar Tour.

“We like to affirm the essential dignity of every person on this planet and part of that is trying to live within sustainable means. So that people can take care of the earth,” said Gaia House Interfaith Center Board President Ellen Jahn.

The panels were donated from AES Solar. Owner Aur Beck said solar is not the future, it’s the now.

“People are doing it. It’s the tax credits, and the incentives, and the technology. It is all just a perfect bundle of joy,” said Beck.

The Gaia House said they’re looking forward to seeing their savings on their electricity bill.

“We’ll be saving around $50 a month with these solar panels,” said Jahn.

Marylynn Perschbacher’ s home will also be on the tour. She’s had solar panels since 2003. She said she only pays a customer charge of $12.88.

“After the electricity I make on these beautiful sunny days, and SREC payments for creating green energy, I basically don’t have an electric bill,” said Perschbacher.

They’re all hoping for bright sky’s on the Heartland Tour. The tour will begin at 10 a.m. and end at 3 p.m. For a full list of  all the tour stops, click here.
