How to make a cheap DIY air filter for wildfire smoke
Wildfire smoke is full of potentially harmful particles that can cause health problems, and as poor air quality continues to blanket the region, it’s important to keep the air in your home clean, experts say.
High-end filters can be pricey if you don’t already have one installed.
Here’s a way to achieve the same result at a fraction of the cost–and, bonus points, it’s probably the easiest DIY project you’ll ever do.
All you need is a HEPA filter and a 20-inch box fan. Both should be available for purchase at your local hardware store, or you can buy them online.
The filters cost about $20. Experts say to place the filter on the back of the box fan and …. that’s it. The suction created by the fan should make the filter stick to the back.
The trick should take out about 90-percent of the dirt and dust in your home's air, according to the Puget Sound Clean Air Agency.
Before purchasing the HEPA filter, make sure it is rated at what’s called a “MERV 13”. That takes out all of the fine particles.
The Puget Sound Clean Air Agency put one of the homemade filters to the test last summer in a 14’ by 14’ room with the doors and windows closed during the wildfire season. They say they saw cleaner air pretty quickly.
The agency says that, for safety reasons, people should not run the fans while not at home or while they are sleeping.
