HoochiCoochi stresses health benefits of Brazilians

HoochiCoochi Wax Studio recently opened its newest location in Canandaigua.

CANANDAIGUA — What do you think of when you hear the words Brazilian wax?

Perhaps you think "painful" or only for bathing suit weather. But ask Deb Henderson, owner of HoochiCoochi Wax Studio, which recently opened its newest location in Canandaigua, and she will say you should think about the health benefits.

HoochiCoochi specializes in Brazilian waxing — the removal of all intimate body hair — for both men and women. Last year, HoochiCoochi, which also has a location in Geneva, completed 1,800 Brazilian waxings.

“We have many clients in the medical field, some OBGYNs, doctors and nurse's offices recommend their patients wax and not shave,” Henderson said. “We have a 28-year-old woman whose doctor sent her to HoochiCoochi as she had developed a lump under her arm that turned out to be malignant. When shaving the underarm, we nick the skin from shaving and not know it; then we apply antiperspirant — and many contain cancer causing agents.”

Henderson says waxing is important for medical reasons because when people shave, they remove skin without even realizing it, causing the edge of the hair shaft to become razor sharp, becoming more prone to ingrown hairs.

“With waxing, I will say ... the first is the worst. ... But after the first time, the hair removal becomes easier as the hair grows back in thinner in diameter, therefore making it easier to remove the next time they come in,” Henderson said. “Most people need to shave either daily or a few times a week. When they wax, it stays gone for four to five weeks, and they find out very fast the benefits of removing hair with the method of waxing far surpasses shaving.”

The wax at HoochiCoochi is imported from Spain and is a hard wax that doesn't stick to the skin. It shrink wraps around the hair, therefore removing only hair and not tugging at the skin, making it a gentle way to remove unwanted hair, in a safe and affordable way, Henderson said.

HoochiCoochi has a youth program available for anyone under the age of 16, in which they can come to the studio to get any unwanted hair removed for half-price as long as they have never shaved.

“This gives parents the option to teach their kids the correct way to remove their unwanted hair and our program helps to make it affordable for them,” said Henderson. “Our goal at HoochiCoochi is to educate the community on the dangers of shaving their unwanted hair.”

HoochiCoochi's Geneva location will be closing at the end of November. All Geneva staff will be transferred to the new Canandaigua location.

“Waxing is really only about personal hygiene; our company is professional and confidential,” Henderson said.

Pricing for HoochiCoochi include: women's Brazilian for shaver, $65; maintenance Brazilian wax at 4-5 weeks, $50; men's "Boyzilian," $85.
